I used a utility knife to clean up the splintered wood on the handle. Tried using a punch and hammer to drive the wedges down further, which would not budge. Finally cleaned them up with a file. Looks better than when received.

As described, this is a Vaughan factory second item. In this particular example, the handle was not fitted very well as shown in the attached photograph. Cosmetic issues aside, the hammer head is securely attached and will provide very good service for a bargain price.
