Council Tool recently discontinued the 8 lbs. splitting maul, and replaced the 6 lbs. Splitting maul with a new design that will “split the difference”.
The new 7 lbs. Splitting maul has been nicknamed “Ol’ No.7”, and will bridge the gap between the often “too heavy” 8 lbs. and the “not heavy enough” 6 lbs. versions.
The new design incorporates a more compact head, with a concave-wedge shape to the blade, and wider body to give more “pop” to the split. The head is balanced from front to back, with a slightly tapered poll that can be used to “finish” a split, without having to drive the blade back into the opened split, potentially driving it further into a splitting stump or into the ground.
These design features make it a better splitting maul, as it is more ergonomically balanced, safer, and a more efficient and productive tool to use at the woodpile.
Specs:

  • 7 lbs. Head weight.
  • 3 3/4 in. Bit length from toe-to-heel.
  • 7 3/8″ Overall head length from bit-to-poll.
  • Concave/Wedge shaped blade, with a high centerline to help keep it from sticking with splitting.
  • Heavy and tapered poll to balance the head from front to back, with the center of mass located within the eye, which increases strike accuracy and improves safety.
  • Hung on a 36” Axe eye straight  American hickory handle.
  • Note: Finished overall length will be slightly less than 36”.

Awesome

So the axe head is awesome. That’s why you buy the axe. The handle did break 8 logs in. I’ve already replaced and swinging away.

Excellent Service, Not so great handle.

Couldn't be happier with the service but the handle split from top to bottom on less than a dozen, non over struck swings into some white oak. The grain of the handle looked a bit off upon arrival but I didn't think it would split like that and so fast. The 7lb maul head is great though and will be rehandled properly and used for years to come. Regardless of the grain being off, still worth every penny.
